I love vintage jewellery, I enjoy the hunt, the find and the compliments I get from my shiny new accessory, but I hate passing up on a vintage treasure just because it is dirty. So I have put together my top 5 tips to keep your vintage jewels clean:
- Beware old wives tales like Vinegar will clean anything and everything for it can harm precious gemstones, you will be amazed at what good ole H2O can really do!
- Read the label! Make sure if you are using a chemical cleaner that it is safe for whatever material you are using. There are different cleaners for silver, gold, brass and gems, opals and pearls.
- Remove dust and dirt off your vintage jewellery by using a soft headed toothbrush. Gently brush your gems, pearls and chains with water. If your fancy...use bottled water? (I kid...kind of)*warning* Soap can make gemstones appear duller don't you know.
- Store your vintage jewellery in pouches, boxes, cases or bubbles, whatever you have. This will help to avoid any un-necessary scratches.
- Make sure after all the scrubbing that your vintage treasure is dry. Storing slightly damp jewels will result in rusting or pitting. Dry before storing!
